This extended period of social distancing and prevention of public assembly has put the noses of a lot of Christians I know out of joint because quite understandably they want to congregate to worship the Lord. Digital services, discord channels, and via other electronic substitutes just aren't the same. Also, some of my brethren in Christ feel it's an attack on their faith to close places of public worship while other areas of assembly are deemed essential and remain open, with penalties under law for violating these sanctions imposed on the places closed for assembly. I just want to note before I continue I have to this point been reluctant to share my IRL location, but I'm long past caring now. I also want to spread some actual information for people in my area about how to best combat COVID-19 that is accurate to the best of knowledge. First off, I currently reside in the state of Alabama in the United States, which to my knowledge is doing fairly well in regards to COVID-19. We have just over 2,000 cases of infection according to the latest results as of the time of this writing, and aside from a few counties with a serious infection, mine is fairly well off, though intend and advise others who wish to remain free of this disease practice all prudent measures to keep it that way until this danger is passed. In an earlier post, I was of the opinion this COVID-19 outbreak would sputter out a bit faster than it has, and I was wrong on that. However, I still stand by the contention humanity needs to remain calm and rational no matter what. Yes, it's deadly if you fall into certain risk groups especially. Yes, it's quite communicable, and yes, there is no easily common cure for it yet, these are all facts. However, some things that are still worth keeping in mind. 1. Viral outbreaks have yet to cause the end of humanity. The worst-ever outbreak of plague in the Western world was the Black Death, and that never managed to wipe out all of humanity. The Spanish Flu killed a lot of people, but it was less deadly, and thus far this COVID-19 has proven several orders milder than that. Therefore, there is no sense losing our minds believing the end is nigh. Humanity will survive this unless we all decide to destroy ourselves with our own panic and paranoia. 2. Recently, I got some news from my mother concerning my father's latest visit to the doctor that turned into a hospital stay that turned into a bit of a bombshell announcement. What was apparently some mild concern over some irregularities in some bodily levels discovered during the visit turned into an official announcement of something I long suspected, I was just waiting for it to become official. Basically, my dad's kidneys, which have been sub-optimal for some time and which he required hospital stays for before, it's gotten to the point he's basically been told he either needs to be put in nursing home for constant dialysis or he can try to live out the rest of his days as comfortably as possible with hospice care. Now, this is not exactly a surprise, I had been expecting this for awhile. The poor man has also incurred injuries that forced him to retire a bit early from his job and is plagued with gout (a nasty variant that seems to be unfortunately hereditary)...

I've seen a ton of people going Chicken Little over COVID-19 outside of China, and frankly, it's inane panic I refuse to indulge. First off, this is not the Dark Ages. Humanity has gotten to the point a nasty strain of influenza is not going to be the death knell of civilization. The Spanish Flu was pretty bad after World War I and killed more people than most battlefields did, but we've gotten a lot better at handling disease since. I won't deny it's foolish not to see a doctor if you think you contracted it. By all means, seek IMMEDIATE medical attention, but otherwise, don't assume you are at super high risk if you live outside China unless you travel frequently and have a reasonable chance of crossing paths with someone who is from that area or you've spent a lot of time on planes with people who have been to areas where those who caught it are high.
