My favorite moment of Jesus calling out stupidity

It's been a while since I wrote a Bible post, but since I like the Bible and roasting fallacious logic, I figured a time when Jesus did just that was optimal for this post.

I will be adding commentary in bold text, the original will be in italics

(courtesy of esv.org, Luke 11: 14-20)

14 yNow he was casting out a demon that was mute. When the demon had gone out, the mute man spoke, and the people marveled.

This was pretty common if you know Jesus. Telling demons to get bent was what he did. Being the literal Son of God, they tended to listen.

15 But some of them said, “He casts out demons zby Beelzebul, the prince of demons,” 16 while others, ato test him, kept seeking from him a sign from heaven. 17 b

This, unfortunately, was way more common than it should have been. Jesus was performing an obviously good thing, and as far as they could see and hear, did so with no ulterior motives. However, sadly proving some people are credulous and very foolish, they were waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Note the other part about waiting for a sign. As if the demon expulsion wasn't Exhibit A.

But he, cknowing their thoughts, said to them, Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste, and a divided household falls. 18 And if Satan also is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? For you say that I cast out demons by Beelzebul. 19 And if I cast out demons by Beelzebul, dby whom do eyour sons cast them out

Jesus, like anyone else fed up with circular logic and credulous types seeing something evil where it did not exist, calls out the logical fault. President Abraham Lincoln would have his own speech patterned after this part of the Bible, famously referred to as the "House Divided" speech. In both versions, the logic is simple:

"If someone works against themselves, they aren't getting anything useful done aside from sabotaging themselves."

Therefore they will be your judges. 20 But if it is by fthe finger of God that I cast out demons, then gthe kingdom of God has come upon you.

After making quick work of the bad logic of his critics, he sums up what should be obvious.
